Smithfield Foods to Close Altoona, Iowa, Facility
Production to be consolidated to other Smithfield facilities to increase efficiencies
Smithfield Foods will close its Altoona, Iowa, ham boning facility and consolidate production volume at other locations to improve the efficiency of its manufacturing platform.
Smithfield will provide transition assistance to 314 employees at the facility who will be affected by the closure. The company will meet with employees individually to provide additional details about the transition plan, including severance, financial incentives to assure business continuity and potential employment opportunities with Smithfield.

Olymel to Close Quebec Processing Facility Focused on Poultry
Canadian meat processor Olymel announced last Friday the definitive closure of its Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu plant as of 19 July.
The plant had mainly processed poultry products, although it also made a small number of pork products.
“This decision comes against a backdrop of falling production volumes, which has led the plant to operate at only 40% of its operational capacity,” explained the company. “A reorganization of production within the Olymel family will enable operations to be redeployed to neighbouring plants with residual capacity to handle these volumes.”...
Missouri Prime Beef Packers to Close Processing Plant in April
In a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice to the state Monday, Missouri Prime Beef Packers announced it will close its processing plant in Pleasant Hope, Missouri due to unforeseeable business circumstances.
The plant will close on April 26, 2024, resulting in the termination of 335 full-time employees. The bulk of layoffs will impact fabrication staff. The closure may be permanent or temporary, added yesterday's letter.

SADA Poultry Plant in Toledo to Cease Operations
The SADA poultry plant in Lominchar, Toledo, will close its doors on 31 January.
The facility, which was once a poultry slaughtering and processing, flour production and freezing complex, saw its activity reduced to the production of roasts, marinades and other chicken products.
According to the CCOO (Spanish Workers' Organisation), the closure is due to the impossibility of renewing the lease of the property. The plant will be dismantled at the request of the owner of the property.
