ANALYSIS: Turkey Cold Storage Hits Record Seasonal Low Despite Varied Category Performance
The volume of total turkey in cold storage still remains at a record seasonal low, coming in 8.9% below March of last year which marked the previous seasonal low. This was led by the whole bird and breast categories. The month-over-month (MOM) change in inventories followed seasonal trends for most categories, with the exception of MST, which saw a MOM decline compared to a 5-year average MOM increase.
Whole birds and breasts both had a greater MOM increase than the 5-year average but remained well below last year. Whole birds saw a 16.4% year-over-year (YOY) decline to mark a new record seasonal low at 118.2 million pounds. While demand hasn’t been particularly robust, production has been extremely limited...
